VALUES STATEMENT
PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT
New Beginnings Incorporation: New Beginnings Transitional Services is a human services organization that organized to end chronic homelessness in the community. We provide social service programs designed to enhance the quality of life for those persons facing homelessness, mental health issues, and at-risk veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse. Services are provided to all persons regardless of race, color, religion, creed, sex, age, marital status, national origin, mental or physical disability, political belief or affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, genetic information, and any other class of individuals protected from discrimination.
IMPACT STATEMENT
The primary demand for homeless services is a constant need. The national trend for human services providers has been to service the general homeless population. A newly emerging market segment shows a national crisis of inadequate service to homeless veterans, particularly female veterans, and at-risk veterans of those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) provides this fact sheet: Conservative estimates count about 131,000 homeless veterans in the United States, most of them from the Vietnam War era. The VA has pinpointed 3,717 homeless veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, but the nationwide total could be as many as twice that -- about 7,400, he said. The VA estimates about 10 percent of all homeless veterans are women, making the estimated number of homeless Iraq-Afghanistan female veterans about 740. That number is said to be rising.
